The Republic of Panama is divided into 10 Provinces and 3 main Comarcas. The ‘Comarcas Indigenas’ are traditional regions, mainly inhabited by indigenous and governed by autonomous indigenous governments.
The ten provinces are Bocas del Toro, Chiriqui, Cocle, Colon, Darien, Herrera, Los Santos, Panama, Panama West and Veraguas.
The three provincial-level Comarcas are Embera, Kuna Yala and Ngöbe-Buglé. The provincial borders have not changed since they were established during Panama’s independence in 1903. In 2014, the province of Panama West was created.
